Rico’s Café EP028 feat. Tyler Stadius
Rico’s Café EP028 feat. Tyler Stadius
This episode, I super excited to bring you an exclusive new mix from one of my long-time favorite djs, Vancouver’s Tyler Stadius.
We caught up a bit in early 2021…
Tyler, it’s been a while… how are you?
Sure has. I’m good, thanks.
I know you live in Vancouver, Canada and your government has had a pretty different response approach to the US… How have you fared through the pandemic?
It’s been stressful, but not nearly as bad as many other places. I’ve been working full time as part of an essential service.
Were you still booking / playing gigs prior to the lockdowns and travel bans?
Still mixing and collecting as much as ever but few gigs.
I know you do some other work outside of music and you mentioned you were quite busy of late… what have you been up to these days? Was that affected as well?
I’m a manager at a very busy specialty retail wine, beer, liquor store. It’s been full on.
Has anything good come of the pandemic in your personal life or anything with the dance music scene you would point to as a “positive”?
It certainly made me think how fortunate we were with so many options every weekend to go out and hear good music.
You have been releasing a lot of your older archive sets and it’s been great to relive some of those. What’s been your approach to that?
It’s completely random. My goal was to convert all of my mixes to digital so I could put away all my old master DAT tapes, cassettes and CDs and be able to occasionaly listen to them when I’m not at home.
As far as I know, you seem to be one of the few djs who hasn’t jumped on the livestream action. Have I missed you, or is that not something that appeals to you?
I’m madly in love with many styles music but haven’t been able to watch a livestream for more then 10 minutes. It just seems weird to me watching a DJ there in their house with budget lights and no crowd. I sometimes will stream sets to listen to while I’m at work or doing things around the house but I don’t enjoy watching them. However, recently I did a mix for Casa Del Soul/ Nathan Sense and his Vidmix series. He made a video for the mix. I love his videos he does for DJ mixes as there’s always cool trippy images/footage to watch while you listen.
I don’t know if you know this or not, but you are one of the only big name headliners we ever brought for our Tempo parties in Atlanta. You were a big inspiration for me back in the early and mid-2000s, we used to travel up to Charlotte to hear you, and I continue to listen to your sets, so I’m really glad to have you on the podcast.
That’s so cool. I met many really good people on those trips.
So, this mix you’ve turned in is pretty heavy and on the dubby techno tip. Tell us a little about the mix… how was it recorded and what was your inspiration / theme?
I’m always buying new tracks and keep the stand outs in a folder. Then when I feel like making a new mix I pick a track to open with, then just go from there. This mix ended up with lots of old tracks that I miss playing.
Any particular tracks you want to call attention to?
Hmm, all are special in their own way. I was definetly in a tracky, heady mood.
Any final shoutouts or upcoming projects we should know about?
Shoutout to you! If I can make time, I’m going to make a few chill, funky mixes.
Well, thanks again for coming on the podcast. It’s truly an honor, and I wish you and Pamela the best and hope you stay safe and well.
Thank you for having me. Cool after so many years we’re still at it.
