Rico's Café Podcast
Who is Rico and where is this café?
Ryan Wofford, aka dj.inc., is an Atlanta native who started djing in 1996. During that time, while at Auburn University, Ryan lived with some knuckleheads who enjoyed teasing him for his smooth style and demeanor with the ladies. A few of said knuckleheads used to call him “Rico” (after the infamous Gerardo song “Rico Suave.” Liked or not, this nickname persisted among some friends for a while and became part of the legend.
Since then, Ryan’s dj career spanned a couple of decades, and while he’s now married and far less suave, the gag lives on.
Now that adulting gets in the way of pursuing a dj career, Ryan has scaled back his appearances, but you can still catch him spinning around in cafés and lounges in Atlanta. And, of course he and his Tempo party partner Chris Sheehy still host a monthly radio show on ProtonRadio.com which has been running nearly 18 years.
Unfortunately, once you get bitten by the dj bug, it’s hard to give it up, and frankly Ryan finds himself collecting and playing more music than ever before.
Hence the birth of the Rico’s Café podcast.
Ryan wanted another avenue to put out some of the mixes that don’t make it onto the Proton show. Additionally, it seemed like a fun idea to be able to work with some artists and djs who have inspired him over the years.
The format of the show is open format and the vision is to feature sounds that he and the guests might not normally play out (or if they don’t get to play out anymore, just bring whatever they are feeling at the time). In episode one, he talks about it a bit and acknowledges the references to the Terry’s Café series by Terry Lee Brown Jr., who along with Terry Francis, The Timewriter and others were a big influence in Inc.’s deep tech house signature sound.
Rico’s Café is the soundtrack to a lounge that doesn’t exist–except in my head.
Each time there is a guest, Ryan takes the submission and crafts a special mix of his own to pair with it–sometimes even mixing straight out of it as if it were a live night out.
Hopefully you’ll enjoy the eclectic smooth blend of tunes from Inc. and his guest, so be sure to subscribe to stay up to date on all the latest tunes.
In 2021, Ryan opened an online vinyl shop www.undergroundvinylsource.com which specializes in deep house, minimal and breaks.
Enjoy!
